The year is 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of one million inhabitants, and the epicenter of a vast empire. The republic was founded on a principle of power sharing and fierce personal competition that never allowed a single man to assume absolute control.
Gaius Julius Caesar (Kiarn Hinds, Munich) concludes a long-term campaign to conquer Gaul. In the course of his conquest, he enriched and perfected a deadly army led by the Thirteenth Legion, a group of men willing to do his bidding. The main characters of the series are two members of Battle Thirteen, Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur).
Warren is a conscientious soldier and family man. He is respected by the people and Caesar himself. Pullo is a womanizer drunken soldier. His fierce fighting skills and rebellious streak also make him popular. Warren and Pullon’s troubled relationship begins when circumstances force them to work together on a mission of great importance to Caesar.
Back in Rome, Caesar’s niece Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is an extremely ambitious and cunning gambler among the Roman aristocracy. In Caesar’s mistress, Servillea, we have two women as cunning and cruel as any man in the empire. Atia’s son (and future Roman emperor) Octavian (Max Pirkis, Master and Commander: At World’s End) is a preternaturally perceptive teenager with a deep understanding of Roman politics.
Caesar’s main rivals are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey is Rome’s co-consul with Caesar. The struggle between Caesar and Pompey is primarily a struggle of will and reason. Ultimately, it comes down to swords. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar is much more complicated. Caesar needs Brutus and his powerful family to legitimize his rule, but Brutus is a Republican who hates Caesar’s imperial ambitions. The father-son relationship is a source of great internal conflict for both.
Caesar’s seizure of power and its consequences for Rome form the backdrop against which all character conflicts take place. Politics, personal rivalries, friendships and some very Oedipal relationships are skillfully combined with historical facts to tell a unique story about Rome in one of its most eventful periods. I assure you that I have only scratched the surface here. There are many characters and stories in this vast story that I left to the viewer.
