This is 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the richest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of a million people and the center of a great empire. The republic was founded on the principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, never allowing one man to take absolute control.

Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) ends a years-long campaign to conquer Gaul. In the process of conquest, he grew rich and honed a deadly army led by the Thirteenth Legion, a group of men ready to obey his every command. Two members of the fighting 13, Lucious Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur), are the central characters of the show.

Vorenus is a conscientious soldier and family man. The men and Caesar himself respect him. The bottle is feminine, for a hard-drinking man. His fiery fighting skills and rebellious streak also make him popular. The uneasy relationship between Vorenus and Pullo begins when circumstances force them to work together on a mission of great importance to Caesar.

Back in Rome, Casesar’s cousin Atia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is a very ambitious and jaded player in the Roman nobility. Along with Caesar’s lover Servilla, we have two women who rival any man in the empire in intelligence and ruthlessness. Atia’s son (and future Roman emperor) Octavian (Max Pirkis, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) is a preternaturally intelligent teenager who understands Roman politics well.

Caesar’s main opponents are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, The Lowdown) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, Layer Cake). Pompey is a Roman consul with Caesar. The battle between Caesar and Pompey is first and foremost a battle of will and reason. Finally, let’s talk about swords. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar is much more complicated. Caesar needs Brutus and his powerful family to legitimize his rule, but Brutus is a republican who abhors Caesar’s imperial ambitions. Their father-son relationship is a source of great internal conflict for both.

Caesar’s rise to power and its consequences for Rome are the backdrop against which all character conflicts arise. Politics, personal rivalry, friendship and some very Oedipal relationships are skilfully combined with historical facts to tell a unique story of Rome during one of its most eventful periods. Rest assured, I’ve only scratched the surface here. This sprawling story has many characters and plot threads that I leave to the viewer to discover.
